 Unit:

Grade 4 -- Map Skills

Focus:

 Map creation, interpretation, and use.

Mass Frameworks:

Social Studies
History and Geography
1. Use map and globe skills to determine absolute locations (latitude and longitude) of places studied. (G)

2. Interpret a map using information from its title, compass rose, scale, and legend. (G)

Mathematics
Patterns, Relations, and Algebra
4.P.4. Use pictures, models, tables, charts, graphs, words, number sentences and mathematical notations to interpret mathematical relationships.
4.P.5. Solve problems involving proportional relationships, including unit pricing (e.g., four apples cost 80¢, so one apple costs 20¢) and map interpretation (e.g., one inch represents five miles, so two inches represent ten miles).
4.D.3 Construct, draw conclusions, and make predictions from various representations of data sets, including tables, bar graphs, pictographs, line graphs, line plots, and tallies.
4.M.4 Estimate and find area and perimeter of a rectangle, triangle, or irregular shape using diagrams, models, and grids or by measuring.

English/Language Arts

19.11: Write brief summaries of information gathered through research

22.4: Use knowledge of correct mechanics (end marks, commas for series, capitalization), usage (subject and verb agreement in a simple sentence), and sentence structure (elimination of fragments) when writing and editing.

23.4: Organize ideas for a brief response to a reading

24.2: Identify and apply steps in conducting and reporting research

  • Define the need for information and formulate open-ended research questions
  • Initiate a plan for searching for information
  • Locate resources
  • Evaluate the relevance of the information
  • Interpret, use, and communicate the information
  • Evaluate the research project as a whole

 Drama

  • Use drama to explore and support other curricula.

History and Social Science

  • Identify the world's hemispheres, oceans, continents, as well as the location of specific landforms and nations.
  • Understand concepts such as longitude, latitude, time zones, and topography.

Math

  • Use appropriate units to measure length, area, volume, mass, and capacity.
  • Use data gathered from an experiment to define variables, identify the median and mean, and construct graphs.

Science/Health and Technology/Engineering

  • Describe different ways in which a problem can be represented (e.g., sketches, diagrams, graphic organizers, and lists.)

Reading/Language Arts

  • Read independently in a sustained way for 20 minutes.
  • Continue to self-monitor comprehension by previewing and predicting, making connections, generating questions, summarizing, visualizing, identifying important ideas, and drawing inferences.
  • Produce multiple paragraph compositions with an introductory paragraph containing a topic sentence, supporting paragraphs with facts, details, or explanations, and a concluding paragraph containing a summary.
  • Answer open-ended questions clearly and with detail.
Instructional Technology Benchmarks
  • Understand and use basic functions of electronic database.

  • Collaborate with classmates and independently use teacher chosen websites.

Library Media Benchmarks
  • Reading Comprehension/Evaluation Skills
    • Locate facts in a text that answer reader's questions
    • Read to locate information
    • Summarize main ideas and offer supporting details
  • Research Skills
    • Use encyclopedia effectively
    • Locate print and nonprint reference tools
    • Record information by taking notes
    • Use nonprint sources to locate facts
    • Apply the Big Six information problem solving method to synthesize and use information
  • Presenting Information
    • Identify and use common organizational structures (e.g., chronological order)
    • Write brief summaries of information gathered through research
    • Gather, organize, and present information in a variety of formats
